Liliuokalani Gardens is the largest authentic Edo-style ornamental garden outside Japan. Queen Liliuokalani donated the original 5 acres to create a public park in 1907. This was increased to 17 acres by the Legislative Committee In November 1917. The garden was opened in 1919 and was meant to be a tribute to the first Japanese immigrants to the Big Island who helped build its agricultural history in 1868.
